Habia Workshops for Updated Standards in Beauty, Nails and Spa
The shape of future qualifications in beauty therapy, nail services and spa therapy will be explored at a series of workshops looking at key changes to the updated National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Beauty Therapy, Nail Services and Spa Therapy at Levels 1, 2 and 3. International Make -Up Artist Trade Show 2010
The International Make-up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) will be held at Alexandra Palace in London on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st January 2010. If you are interested in make-up and would like to experiment with products or learn the latest techniques, have a look at the event website for more details and ticket information. The show is open to the public and you can buy a one day student ticket for £28.00 or a two day ticket for £48.00. If you can't make the show it's worth having a look at the website, as it includes a photo gallery and a video gallery of last year's show.

Christmas Holiday
Don't forget to return or renew any books that you have on loan before you break up for the Christmas holiday, so that you don't have any unwelcome fines in the new year. You can renew your books using the online catalogue, ( click on the My Account tab at the top of the page) either in College or at home via the College website. Any additional books that you take out on loan will be issued until after Christmas, but make sure you check on your receipt which day they are due back. The Library Christmas Opening hours are also available on the Online Catalogue

The Salon Magazine
The December issue of a new addition to our journal collection is now available at Richmond House. The Salon magazine is a trade publication that covers all aspects of the UK hairdressing and beauty therapy industry. You can access the current issue and back issues from 2007 online from The Salon magazine website There is a ‘search’ button to look for a particular topic in the magazine and pages can be printed out. After clicking on the link, click on the ‘inside this issue’ tab at the top of the page, then ‘view latest e-mag’ from the drop-down menu. On the current issue page there is a tab to the left to ‘view archive’ and a tab to the right to ‘search’.

Ebooks Catalogue
If you want to see what e-books are available, you can check by using the Ebook catalogue link that is on the online Library Catalogue. Remember to read the Ebooks User Guide before checking the catalogue as the different e-books databases vary in the way that you use them. We now have four e-book databases, the newest addition is ebrary which includes some beauty therapy, biology and massage books, and you can access all of them via UCB Online and the Athens link. If you want to know more about Athens databases and e-books, call in and see me at Richmond House Library.

Young Hairdresser of the Year
A TV programme of interest will be showing on BBC3 next week- The Young Hairdresser of the Year. Five young hairdressers will be competing, and the tasks include creating a glossy hairdo for a magazine cover, an 'iconic' look and another for the catwalk. The judges are Adee Phelan and Beverly C (Corbella). The programme starts 10.30pm-11.30pm on Monday 30th November, but is repeated at various times on BBC3 later next week. The International Therapist magazine will now be published quarterly instead of bi-monthly. We have the October 2009 issue in stock, so the next issue will be arriving in January 2010. Clothes Show Live 2009

Tickets are now on sale for Clothes Show Live 2009, taking place at the NEC, Friday 4th-Wednesday 9th December. The show is celebrating it's 21st birthday, and joining the celebrations is Gok Wan, who will be presenting in the Fashion Theatre and styling on the Hair & Beauty Stage on Sunday 6th December. Several members of the Hollyoaks cast will also be paying a visit to the show. Plus, Clothes Show Live is launching the third annual competition to find the Young Hairdresser of the Year, presented by Hairdressers Journal Interactive and supported by Your Hair. If you like to read journals online, you can download online pdf versions of the current issue of three beauty magazines from the Beautyserve.com website. To access these, click on the Beautyserve link and select the title from the 'magazine downloads' option on the page.
The titles available are: Guild News - trade journal for the beauty industry,Tanning World- professional indoor tanning industry magazine, and The Nail File- newspaper for nail technicians. We also have FREE print copies of the latest issue of The Nail File at Richmond House, available at the Library counter.

Style in the City 2009

The Style in the City event, which is a city-wide fashion and beauty festival, is taking place 24-26 September in Birmingham City centre. You can watch designer catwalk shows, have beauty treatments, and shop for jewellery.
A standard entry ticket costs £12.00 and for this you get: A Ticket to one designer catwalk show,access to all exclusive in-store events at participating retailers (by showing your SITC badge), a designer goodie bag, as designed by an up and coming Midlands-based designer,

Self-issue System
Any current students returning in September will notice something different when taking books out on loan. We now have a new Library self-service kiosk system in operation at both Summer Row and Richmond House.
Follow the instructions on the screen of the self service kiosk to issue or return items. If you have any fines exceeding £10 you cannot borrow any more items. Your fines will need to be cleared before you can issue or renew any books, and you can pay your fines by pressing the pay fines button on the self - service kiosk.
You will need your College ID card and pin number in order to be able to borrow or return books and also to pay fines.

There's a hair related TV programme on BBC 4 tonight (8.30- 9.00pm). 'The Sumo Tokoyama: The Art of Hairdressing for Wrestlers' deals with the aesthetics of sumo wrestling and the traditional top knots that are crafted daily by the tokoyama, or sumo hairdresser. Any hairdressing student who has had problems accessing the Hairdressing Training database via Athens, due to technical problems, will be pleased to hear that it is now available again. If you are unaware of this valuable resource, aimed at NVQ level hairdressing students, now might be the time to have a look at the database. To access Hairdressing Training, click on the 'Library' tab on Blackboard, then on the 'Athens' link to take you to the 'My Athens' page. Scroll down the page until you see the 'Mimas Services' menu and click on the Hairdressing Training link.

This is a health, beauty, fitness, healthy eating and wellbeing event and features this year include a Healing Herb Garden and an Organic Beauty Pavilion. Professional Spa 2009 Exhibition Postponed
The Professional Spa exhibition that was due to take place at ExCel this March has now been postponed until 2010, due to the current economic conditions. The Professional Spa Conference is unaffected and the Professional Beauty exhibition will still take place between 1-3 March 2009. For more info see the Professional Spa/Beauty press release.

Happy (Chinese) New Year ! 4707 The Year of the Ox

The Chinese New Year begins today (26 January) so happy new year to any Chinese student checking the blog. Why not have a look at my post for the Chinese New Year 2008, to see Chinese related (beauty and complementary) books in the Library.

Holistic Health 2009

The 2009 Holistic Health complementary trade event might be one you want to make a note of, as it is moving to Hall 11 at the NEC in Birmingham.It will take place on Sunday 25th and Monday 27th April. The event is trade only and entrance is free to salon owners and managers, qualified beauty therapists, nail technicians, college buyers, final year students and complementary therapy practitioners. Professional Beauty London March 1-3 2009

The 2009 Professional Beauty show will be taking place Sunday 1st March- Tuesday 3rd March 2009 at ExCel, London. Please note that ALL STUDENTS must register in advance for this trade-only event, that the wearing of uniforms is now mandatory for all students attending and that proof of professional status (such as College ID card) will need to be shown on arrival. Tickets pre-purchased online cost £20.00, but this includes free unlimited masterclasses and hands-on demonstrations. International Spa Show

The International Spa Show, which is an event dedicated to spa tourism and the spa and beauty industry, will be taking place Friday 20 -Sunday 22 March 2009 at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in London.
Exhibits include: Beauty treatments and products; Spa treatments, products and services; Skincare products and services; Fitness, Health and Wellbeing products and advice; Nutrition products and advice and Rejuvenation and anti-aging products and advice.

Most Desirable Spas 2009

The 50 most desirable spas, voted for by the readers of Professional Beauty, can be found on pages 49-69 of the December 2008 issue. There is also a feature on page 70 - 'Exquisite Taste'- where seven spa experts give their views on the image that is best to ensure spa or salon success. Might be worth a read for those thinking of setting up their own spa!
