Here are the Christmas and new year opening hours for Richmond House Library and Summer Row Library. Don't forget to return or renew any books that you have out on loan, before you leave College for the Christmas break, to prevent any overdue fines when you return in January. Have a good break!

National Make-Up Awards 2011

The UK's first National Make-Up Awards for Make-Up Artists, will be taking place live on Monday 28th February 2011 at The Professional Beauty show held at ExCel Exhibition Centre, London. There are four categories including Student Make-Up Artist. The last date to register for the competition is 24th December. See the event website for details.

Clothes Show Live 2010

The Clothes Show Live is currently taking place at the NEC, Birmingham. Gok Wan is presenting in the Fashion Theatre 3-5th December, but the Clothes Show Live will continue at the NEC until the 8th December. See the event website for more info.

IMATS 2011 London Show
The 2011 International make-Up Artist Trade Show will be taking place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January at Alexandra Palace, London. There are several types of tickets with discounts for students, although during general show hours it is open to the general public. Young Beautician of the Year
Watch BBC3 on Tuesday 7th December 10.30pm- 11.30pm to see four beauticians competing to be named Young Beautician of the Year. The contestants will be showing their skills at waxing, tanning, a beauty quiz and two of the beauticians will be performing a 'yummy mummy' make over in the final round. Judging them will be facialist Vaishaly Patel. If you missed Young Hairdresser of the Year, shown earlier in the series, you can watch it on BBC iplayer

New Book in Stock

We have a new book in stock at Richmond House Library that is of particular interest to anyone studying for the Theatrical and Media Make-Up Diploma, Birmingham Royal Ballet: a Cinderella Story

Due to student demand, there are also extra copies available at Richmond House Library of Anatomy and Physiology: Therapy Basics, (3rd. ed.) McGuinness. So, if you've been waiting for a copy of this book to take out on loan, call in to the Library and collect a copy now.

The Salon Magazine Online
The December 2010 online issue of The Salon Magazine (it has info on hairdressing and beauty therapy) is now available. Features in this issue include cost effective ways to market your salon online and hair and beauty services celebrities are buying and trying. Click on the title above, then on the E-MAG ONLINE logo on the left side of the page, to access the magazine.

Young Hairdresser of the Year
A TV programme of interest is showing on BBC 3 10.30-11.30pm tomorrow (23rd November) - Young Hairdresser of the Year, presented by George Lamb. This is the first programme in a series of 5 programmes that features young people working in different trades. (Later in the series you will be able to see Young Beautician of the year). Young hairdressers will be undergoing four challenges, and the first task is to create a vintage 40s look. See the Radio Times for more info.

UK Spa and Wellness Conference
The one-day UK Spa and Wellness Conference, aimed at spa and wellness professionals from every business sector involved in spa operations including; spa, hospitality, health & fitness, local authority leisure clubs and salon owners /operators, will be taking place on 11th November 2010. The conference will be held at Centre Parcs, Sherwood Forest and will offer tips on best practice, education and continual professional development. The Alternative Hair Show

The Alternative Hair Show 2010, which helps raise funds for Leukaemia Research, will be held at The Freemasons Hall, London, on Sunday 17th October. See the event website to book tickets and for further information.

The Summer 2010 issue of Habia News is now available in Richmond House Library. You can access previous issues via the Habia ( the government appointed standards setting body for hair, beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and African type hair) website.

Looking for the latest catwalk make-up and hair designs? London Fashion Week 2010 (September 17th- 22nd) might just inspire you! You don't need to go to London, as you can see the catwalk reports by visiting the London Fashion Week website.

Just to say a big 'hello' to all new hairdressing and beauty therapy students starting at the College! I may have seen you at one of the Library inductions last week, but if you missed out on an induction, just call into the Library and I can show you how to take books out and give you some info about the Library. The Clothes Show London event will be taking place Friday June 25th - Sunday June 27th 2010 at Earls Court in London.

It might seem a long way off, but the Total Beauty Show is taking place at Excel in London on Sunday 27th February and Monday 28th February 2011. Journals Area at Summer Row
If you've just returned from the Easter break and are intending to use the journals at Summer Row Library you will find that they are no longer next to the group work area on the ground floor. The journals have been relocated to the upper floor of the library, to enable upgrading of the group work area

FHT 2010 Conference
Complementary Therapies and The Pregnant Client is a one-day conference taking place at The King's Fund, London, on 24 September 2010 and will address the latest research, best practice and issues for therapists practising or considering practising on pregnant clients. Afro Hair and Beauty Live
The 2010 Afro Hair and Beauty Live event will be taking place on Sunday 30th and Monday 31st May (bank holiday day) at the Business Design Centre, London.
There will be hair and fashion shows, free seminars and workshops, competitions, hair products, colour cosmetics, skincare and the chance to get a make over. A tv programme that might be of interest is showing tonight (12 April) at 10:00pm - 11:05pm on Channel 4- The World's Strangest Plastic Surgery and Me. This includes a man who has spent the last 20 years undergoing surgery so he can resemble a tiger.

Young Make-up Artist of the Year
The Clothes Show Young Make-up Artist of the Year Award is open to artists with experience of three years or less and those studying and practising in the fields of make-up and beauty. The closing date for entries is 21 May 2010, and the award will take place at the Style Stage at Clothes Show London on Sunday 27th June. Earls Court, London, is the venue for the Vitality Show 2010. The Vitality Show is a health, fitness, beauty and wellbeing event and will include exhibitors from skincare, nailcare, cosmetics and haircare companies. The March 2010 issue of Conde Nast Traveller's 'Spa Special', features the readers' spa awards 2010, so it might be worth having a look at. You can read the print copy in the Library, but there is also info on the Conde Nast website

You can see the latest catwalk reports, videos and interviews for London Fashion Week , (useful for seeing the latest trends in hair and make up), by visiting the event website.

Renewing Books
If you are off College this week, don't forget to renew any books due back before you return next week. You can do this via the Online Catalogue by selecting the 'My Account' tab at the top of the homepage or by telephone.

Yoga Magazine Online
If you are interested in yoga, then you might like to have a look at the first issue of a new yoga magazine, OM Yoga & Lifestyle, which is available online. Click on the link and then on the image on the magazine webpage.

New HJI Blogs
The Hairdressers Journal International website, HJi , includes four new blogs that are worth taking a look at. Red Haute Day features high fashion, avant-garde styles and the latest trends and Celebrity Spy look at celebrity hair trends. To see all four blogs, go to the HJi website and scroll down the page until you see the New HJi Blogs link.

Historical Hair and Beauty Resource
A resource has been launched by the National Portrait Gallery focusing on hairstyles and fashions from previous centuries. Although aimed at students aged 14-19 studying the Hair and Beauty Studies Diploma, you might find this website of interest. To see The History of Hair and Beauty, click on the link.

Useful Habia Resources
Habia (Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority) has launched it's own YouTube channel with videos covering a range of issues such as salon safety and dermatitis. Click on the link to see what's available. Habia has also updated it's continuing professional development (CPD) website, so you might find this of interest, too.

The VTCT Conference
The first national conference held by the VCTC will be taking place at the NEC Birmingham on Monday 26 April in association with the Beauty UK/Holistic Health exhibition. VTCT is also holding a competition for all centres of further education, schools and private training centres throughout the UK to identify good practice in the teaching of hair, beauty and complementary therapies and present those examples at the conference. Just a reminder that you can read the latest issue of The Salon magazine, by clicking the E-MAG ONLINE button on The Salon website.

Habia Workshops
Workshops run by Habia in February 2010, will be looking at key changes to the updated National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Beauty Therapy, Nail Services and Spa Therapy at Levels 1, 2 and 3, which form the basis of new qualifications being developed by awarding bodies for launch in July 2010. The workshops are being held on Monday 8 February in London, Tuesday 9 February in Manchester and on Thursday 11 February in Doncaster. Each workshop will run from 1pm to 4pm. As well as looking at the changes to the standards, the workshops will cover changes to the Assessment Strategies and Evidence Requirements. See the Habia site for more info.

The Vitality Show
The Vitality Show 2010 will be taking place Thursday 18th-Sunday 21st March at Earls Court 2 in London. This is a health, beauty, fitness, healthy eating and wellbeing event and new this year is the One Life Theatre, featuring a live brand new expert speaker stage, where you can listen to inspirational talks and demonstrations from top life coaches and career experts. Want to keep up-to-date with nail industry news, product launches, and read step-by-steps and features? There are FREE copies of the latest issue of The Nail File available at Richmond House Library. You will find them on display at the Library Counter, so call in and help yourself to one, before they have all gone.

The Sapphires Awards 2010
The Sapphires (salon awards for franchising intelligence) is an industry award aimed at recognising and rewarding success in the franchise sector. The 2010 Sapphires will be held on Monday 14th June at The Dorchester Hotel, in London. See the event website for more info.

Natural Health Fair
There will be a Natural Health Fair taking place on Sunday 18th April 2010, at the Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre in Birmingham. The event, aimed at promoting natural health to the public, will have 150 exhibitors covering body, beauty and exercise health. A pre-booked ticket will cost £2.00.
